It all started with an unconventional idea that grew into the most unique aviation project Central Florida has ever seen – the Orlando Apopka Airport.

In 2004, a developer purchased the Orlando Country Airport. At the time, the airport had been sleepy little strip just outside of Apopka for over fifty years. However, changes were on the way. The developer saw that general aviation aircraft in Central Florida needed a friendly home.

Almost two hundred separate lots were platted and offered for sale, the runway was lengthened and widened, and a parallel taxiway added. Once annexed into the City of Apopka, the airport gained a new name, the Orlando Apopka Airport. No more renting hangars or land leases. Now, aircraft owners are building equity and protecting their airplanes in privately owned hangars. Most recently the runway was repaved and stripped, putting a finishing touch on the appearance of the airport.

Aviation business owners found value in owning rather than tossing away cash on leased locations. Today Orlando Apopka Airport is home to several mechanics and flight instructors, a headset manufacturer, and an aircraft research/development firm.

The airport is more than just a safe haven for airplanes; it has become a social center for aviation enthusiasts featuring fly-ins, hangar parties and lots of just “plane” hanging out.
